Boscombe Community Fair Steward Team

Boscombe Community Fair Steward Team volunteers have qualifications and experience in NVQ2 Spectator Management and Safety; Health and Safety; 1st Aid; Food Safety Level2; BSL101; Equality and Diversity; Working with young people and/or vulnerable adults; disabled accessibility and various other areas pertinent to the organising of an event.

Boscombe Community Fair Steward Team (BCFST) was set up in 2008 when BCF had “Train to Gain” funding to put some stewards on 3 NVQ2 Spectator Management & Safety courses over 3 years via Integar Training.

We needed 4 assessment events for each 8-12 month course, so I advertised throuh Bournemouth CVS & was INUNDATED with replies requesting volunteer stewards at events that would otherwise be unable to afford staff.

We noticed that our stewards not only gained a qualification, but also confidence & self-worth through volunteering and BCFST was born.

By June 2012 BCFST had got to the stage where we wanted to “get official” so 14 of us set up a constitution & committee, with a board of trustees from the team. We’ll meet 3 times a year to discuss opportunities & resources, with emergency meetings possible to discuss any urgent issues arising with the day to day running of the team or the potential of any funding or courses that become available.

We are not registered with the Charity Commission yet (as our funds are below £5000), but we ARE a member organisation of Bournemouth CVS & in the process of registering as a Small Charity with HMRC (Tax Office) which will entitle us to claim Gift Aid on any donations made to BCFST.

The youngest you can be for stewarding is 19 (no upper age as ability is the only limit). We accept disabled; I set the team up from an electric wheelchair!  If you’re under 19 or don’t feel stewarding is “your thing” their are plenty of other volunteering opportunities: funding applications; website maintenance; crewkidz onsite contact; driving (car pool to/from events);course/tutor hunting; tutoring; workshop leading; catering; equipment cataloging & procurement; personnel management…the opportunities are endless.
